Garden Lesson Plans
In the fall of 2019, I worked as a Garden Education Assistant at the Mamquam Edible Schoolyard (MESY) in Squamish. MESY is a program that brings kids out into the school garden and teaches them all about gardening, cooking, composting, making nature art and much more.
I taught garden lessons along with the other garden teachers and designed some of my own as well. Here, I have provided a few of the lesson plans we taught in the fall in case you are interested in implementing these yourself. At MESY, classes came in for 30 minutes at a time, but this was split into two activities so every lesson plan accounts for only 15 minutes. Feel free to tweak the lessons to fit your needs and the needs of the children you are teaching.
It is worth noting that these lessons do not exist in a vacuum, and I have laid out a more extensive educational framework to guide the implementation of an educational garden program in my bachelors thesis. If you are interested in learning more about garden-based education and how we can use it to work towards a greener future, please see my bachelors thesis here.
